Hi, Just a suggestion that SolidCP should allow external link for images.

Pros:

  • Save some disk space (It's valued when you store on SSD)
  • Easier to manage: you don't have to download each images to each servers (Assuming you had 50 servers, it would be a harsh to download our image to each server and even need to delete it when unused)

Cons:

  • Consume more bandwidth
  • Slower deployment: solidcp need to download image every time a VM is deployed. We can somehow improve this by checking if the image is there (Useful when you are deploying many VMs at the same time)

Hello,

SolidCP does support Microsoft CSV for example you just point SolidCP to the CSV volume path.

It is possible to use a UNC path but i has not been tested but you will need to make sure the required permissions are applied.

Thanks,

Do you have specific example @Trevor? Still not understand how we can use remote images.

I've personally tried VHDX on Cloud storage mounted by netdrive, Hyper-v won't recognize VHDX from that drive as discussed here:  https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2119724-create-vm-on-hyper-v-based-on-vhdx-stored-on-ftp-server-or-remote-drive

Hello,

An example would be to follow this guide: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clustering/2012/04/06/how-to-add-storage-to-clustered-shared-volumes-in-windows-server-2012/

Eith regards to things like netdrive you will need to make sure these are fully accessible to the SolidCP Server user.

Thanks,

Hi @Trevor, I didn't use SolidCP to test on Netdrive's drive, I first tried using hyper-v console and it resulted error, people on spicework said I will need to use VHD instead of VHDX, but VHD is somewhat low performances to me.

But when I copy that VHDX (from that netdrive's drive) to my physical drive, and try again, it did work. That's why I would like to have a option that solidcp auto download the image from a specific link, store on images directory (Which is set on solidcp) use it to create new VMs, then delete it when not needed anymore. That way, we can use for example: 10 pre-made images with 10GB each, but will only took 10 GB on our server (Instead of 100 GB permanent)

It's a trade off between bandwidth and storage (also management because if you have one more images, you just need to upload to that server, not every single server we had), It will have far more benefits considering your server using SSD drives. (Saved disks can be use for VMs). HDD is okay to stores those locally

Regarding cluster shared volume, not anyone can set up a cluster, in my case, I own servers from many different suppliers (different Datacenters, locations), which is not supporting clusters things I guess?
