Hi All,

Is this possible, has anyone attempted it?

DFS could replicate the hosting spaces (or robocopy/scripts etc.) but how would you setup the 2nd web server for this - Would it have to be a manual IIS website created or can SCP help with this?  The LB can obviously balance between the 2 web servers.

Thanks,

Ric

Hello,

It's been quite a while back that i last experimented with loadbalancing sites.

the main problem with Loadbalanced is that you need to have near to instant replication of all files (including cached and locked files) else you have issues where the delay between content causes conflicts (and odd behavior with dynamic sites like a busy forum etc).

That being said : You can use Shared IIS configuration or Web Farm to do the actual site Replication (this should work fine with SolidCP too).

For storage we had most success with iscsi and parallel file system, though their hard to come by in Windows (most cost alot).

robocopy/scripts work but there's generally a 5+ min delay between them (or high i/o load) ontop of locked files (locked by iis), and sometimes simply failing to copy dirs when there's alot to copy (for example new large site, or many dynamic changes in one go).

In general due to storage issues a failover is usually much more easy and safe to setup.

it all comes down to budget tho, in general low budget clusters generally work less good then a single normal server, where if your budget is high the quality of software and hardware increases providing more stability, monitoring, and overall health (so much more chance to succeed and gain more uptime then a single server).

Regards,

Marco
