I'm not sure how the auto updater works in SolidCP. 1.4.2 has been rleased, but there doesn't seem to be any option in the autoupdate page to update to that. Do I need to upgrade my Enterprise Server and Portal first to the new version? I have seen a few places mention a powershell script, but that uses UNC and my server are all on a public network that doesn't allow UNC connectivity.

At the current moment the best method is to use the powershell script but as you have said it uses UNC paths on each server to be able to connect and update the files.
As your unable to do this your best to either use the SolidCP installer on each server to upgrade or follow the manual process found at https://solidcp.com/kb/update/manual-update/

So what does the auto-update page in the system actually do?
That was once a project of a contributor, however it only updates SolidCP Server. (not portal / enterprise).
To my knowledge it also uses the network path.
